Lawyers threaten to ‘paralyse courts from September’
Portugal Resident
As if the strikes waged throughout the year by court workers, and habitual case backlogs, were not enough, now lawyers are threatening to ‘paralyse’ Portugal’s courts (further) from September. The reason being they want to pressure the government into including salary increases for defence lawyers in the next State Budget. Negotiations on these increases are not complete: the justice ministry has shown willingness to continue with them in September, and the Order of Lawyers (Ordem dos Advogados) wants to strike while the iron is hot, and “give a clear signal to political power”, it says.
